Dr. Mpopi Lenake

Dr Mpopi Lenake

Dr Lenake is an ophthalmologist with a special interest in oculoplastic surgery.

What is oculoplastic surgery?

Oculoplastic surgery is a subspecialty of ophthalmology that focuses on the surgical and non-surgical treatment of conditions affecting the eyelids, orbit (eye socket), and surrounding structures of the face. This type of surgery is performed by ophthalmologists who have completed additional training in the field. Procedures performed can include reconstruction of the eyelids after removal of cancer, with the cancer removal ideally utilising Mohs micrographic surgery, or reconstruction following trauma, and also treatment of lacrimal (tear duct) obstruction.  Other common oculoplastic procedures include eyelid lift (blepharoplasty), removal of tumors or cysts on the eyelids or face, and repair of droopy eyelids (ptosis).

Soon after her specialist training, she departed for Melbourne, Australia where she completed the Orbital, Plastics and Lacrimal fellowship at the prestigious Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.

Apart from reconstructive surgery of the periocular region following eyelid skin cancer surgery, she treats all medical and surgical oculoplastic conditions in adults and children. This includes a wide variety of conditions that can involve the orbit (eye socket), eyelids, eyelid skin cancers and tear ducts.

She was the recipient of the Justin Van Selm medal, which is awarded to outstanding candidates in the fellowship examination of the College of Ophthalmologists of South Africa. She was also awarded her MMed degree with distinction (Cum Laude) from the University of Cape Town.

She is the current president of the South African Society of Oculoplastic Surgeons (SASOPS) and is a member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS).
